New Trade Counter and Office for Shelving4Shops

At Shelving4Shops we never sit still for long! With an ever-increasing product list and huge range of shop shelving stock held on site, we decided that it was time to move our office and build a trade counter for customers and visitors. Our new trade counter is now open from 9am to 5.30pm on Monday to Friday, and from 9am to 2pm on Saturdays. We welcome all customers - old and new - to visit us in our Midlands showroom, which is currently being extended to include new stock ranges.

The journey from upstairs to downstairs took about a week and went from a store room with a concrete floor to an empty office space with a lovely new carpet in record time.

This was our new office on Friday morning. By Friday afternoon, the telephone lines were being moved and the main office move was underway.

By Saturday night – and I do mean around 9pm – we had a fully-functioning office and all that was left to do was get settled in. The trade counter was built a week later and customers are already feeling the benefit of having somewhere to discuss their plans and wait in comfort while we get their order ready.

Big Plans for Leicestershire Shop Owner

Some people think it’s better to hold back on big projects and shop refits in this ever-changing financial climate, but not so for a Leicestershire man who has gone all out to convert a tired-looking furniture show room in Barwell into a fresh looking Londis store.

Before the refit 

As you can see this wasn't just a quick lick of paint or replacing a few ceiling tiles - the property needed a full refit and major building work. The shop was split in two with a brick supporting wall, and since this layout wouldn't work for a convenience store, the wall had to go...

Removing the wall opened up the whole the shop floor, providing an expanse of wall space which has been maximised buy installing large runs of multidec chillers and double door freezers.

With the wall was taken out, steel support beams were added to take the weight of the upstairs floor and roof trusses. A new floor was added using light coloured floor tiles which give the property a nice bright feel - this was also necessary to make the floor level which made our job a lot easier when it came to fitting the retail shelving!

The whole of the existing ceiling was removed and a new suspended ceiling installed. Modern lighting was fitted and extra lights added to brighten the shop. All this work has really transformed the shop from an old dark building to a modern and inviting retail space.

Retail shelving was added in between the chillers, including magazine shelving and wall shelving units. Two runs of gondola shelving was placed in the centre of the floor, adding direction and flow around the store. Finally, end bays were added to each gondola run to maximise the floor space and give a professional look.

A four metre counter was installed and wire stacking baskets added for crisps and confectionery items, helping to encourage impulse buys whilst customers queue at the till and allowing the store to maximise on sales.

Wire dump bins were also added around the store to fill awkward spaces and make the shop look more interesting. After all the retail shelving had been assembled it was clear to determine any blind spots around the shop and where CCTV cameras could be installed.

Londis organised and fitted the shop front signs on the outside of the property which completely transformed the look of the old furniture showroom into a modern and inviting convenience store.

Then all that was left to do was merchandise the shop shelving and start trading! The

A fresh look at shop shelving for the new year

Starting a new business can mean long hours, late nights and substantial outlay. With this in mind, there is often a tendency to cut corners to try to save a few pennies. We've all been guilty of this at some point when trying to lower costs, but rather than sacrificing on quality, there are ways to find decent shop fittings at affordable prices.

When you're setting up a new shop, you may be able to reduce costs by sourcing used materials and carrying out some of the work yourself if you feel confident enough. Of course, there's no point in doing this without the right skills - it always costs more to have something put right rather than hiring someone to do it properly the first time!

When Jim from Derby visited our showroom to buy some shop shelving and shop fittings for his new store, he told us he was on a tight budget and was interested in looking at the used shop shelving we had available. With Jim's low budget in mind, we sat down and drew up a plan of his shop, taking into consideration the position of the counter and pillars in the centre of the floor as these often cause problems when trying to position your gondola shelving. (You can almost guarantee there will always be at least one pillar in the way!) After about twenty minutes and a walk around our warehouse, Jim was satisfied we were able to supply him with what he needed and we agreed to deliver the shelving and assemble it for him. We just had one final question for him: was the floor flat? He assured us that it was (but might be a "little springy" at points, as it was a wooden floor), and that since his budget didn't stretch to a new floor it would be staying... or at least that's what he thought!

The next day we loaded up the van and off we went... When entering the shop we couldn't help noticing a six foot deep hole in the floor which looked like someone had fallen through the day before. Jim assured us he would get it fixed and suggested we start putting up the shelving. We had our doubts but got started...

Cutting corners on something as important as the floor is never a good move, even if you are on a tight budget. Not only does an uneven floor look bad, but it makes it extremely difficult to keep the shop shelving straight, and this gives a tired and messy appearance to your shop. A floor in bad condition can also be a tripping hazard and will be costly to repair at a later date, when your shop is open and fully stocked.

Luckily, however, it didn't get to this stage. After putting up all the gondola shelving and having a few days over Christmas to think about it, Jim decided to take it all down again and have the whole floor relaid. And what a transformation it made! Jim replaced all the old rotten flooring and out of date carpet with a fresh, bright-looking laminate which has given the shop a new, clean look.

Supermarket Shelving for Nigeria - in Time for Christmas?

So when I received an email on a cold, wet November day enquiring about supermarket shelving for a shop that needed to be renovated and open in time for Christmas, I got my pen and paper ready...

The email read: "We have a large shop in Nigeria and require shelving and fixtures for our supermarket. We are about 90% finished and would like to be open before Christmas," and came with a few pictures and a plan.

Great, I thought, with pictures and a plan this shouldn't take long. It wasn't until I opened the attachment that I nearly fell off my chair.

I thought, we must be talking about another Christmas. I mean, I've visited lots of shops in the past - some with whole walls missing and parts of the ceiling hanging down - but never one in such a raw state, and expecting to be finished and open in just eight weeks!

To add to my surprise, just a few minutes later the phone rang and I heard a faint voice asking: "Did you get my shop plan?"

"Yes," I replied, "But I'm not sure where to start as the drawings are a bit...vacant."

The store owner explained what he needed - shelving for the wall and gondola shelving for the middle of the shop. I assured him we'd do our best to help but that it might be a bit of a rush to be open for Christmas, seeing as there wasn't even a floor in the building yet...

Exciting times and a new venture for a young couple in Coventry

Starting a new business can be scary, but not if you choose the right location and product. And that's just what a young couple have done in the heart of the student area in central Coventry - the perfect location for a stationery shop. With high footfall on a busy street, their new venture is sure to be a winner.

After visiting our showroom they decided to go for one 7m long gondola shelving unit to be positioned down the centre of the store.
