Designing a Shelving Layout for Your Store

Designing the right shelving layout for your shop is the most important thing you can do when setting up or refitting a retail store. The way your shelving is configured will determine the direction of traffic through your store as well as determining how much stock you will be able to display. Remember that first impressions really do count, and having a well-thought-out store layout can make your shop appealing and effective for customers, resulting in more sales for you!

First, you'll need to take accurate measurements of your floor space, marking on your plan exactly where electrical outlets, alcoves, windows and doors are positioned. It can be worth making a few copies of this original plan so that you can try out different configurations. If you have an idea of where you want to place your counter and shop shelving, make a note of it or cut out paper templates of each element to see how best you can fit them in.

Next it's time to look at the types of retail shelving that will be most useful in your store. There are several main types of shelving to choose from, including:

  • Wall shelving: This type of shop shelving is fitted up against your store's walls and can be joined to other units to form a run. Wall shelving is usually ended with a corner unit or end bay.

  • Gondola shelving: Gondola shelving is one of the most popular types of retail shelving as it provides maximum shelving space on both sides of the unit. Gondola shelving can also create aisles in your store and guide traffic flow.
  • Pegboard shelving: Pegboard backing allows for shelves, pegs and hooks of different heights to be positioned according to the products you need to display. Perfect for hanging items and for when you need to stock a wide variety of different sized products.
  • End bays and corner bays: These units finish off shelving runs and provide shelving to fit into corners. End bays are ideal for promotional, seasonal and spontaneous purchases while corner bays make use of awkward spaces.

Shelving4Shops Clear Used Shelving from the Olympic Village

It might not have been a gold medal event but it certainly was a golden opportunity to help dismantle some of the Olympic Village! This used shelving was easy to dismantle and with our skilled team on hand, the job took us just a day complete.

Being so professional on-site made the Olympic clean-up team’s job much easier and they were happy to see all of the shelving and uprights come down in a safe and timely manner.

Shelving4Shops is happy to quote for used shop shelving, and offer a dismantling service for larger stores, including supermarkets.

We not only offer used shop shelving but we are also able to supply and fit new shelving, so if we don’t have enough second hand shop shelving you could top up by mixing it with some new! We have the following new shelving available along with many more:
  • Vegetable and fruit displays - Many stores now sell fresh produce as customers are likely to repurchase frequently due to its short shelf life. Fruit and vegetables are a product that consumers like to pick up and visually inspect before purchasing so it is important to use a display system that caters to this. Using baskets and trays ensures that all the produce will not fall to the floor once customers start purchasing goods.
  • Gondola shelving units - A classic shelving option in many stores, gondola shelving is highly versatile and comes in a 4 heights and 4 widths to ensure you find the perfect match for your store.
  • Magazine shelving units - The best way to display magazines is upright so customers can quickly and easily see the front cover which is often the main selling point. These units can be used for any paper goods where it is important to the sale to see the front, e.g. greeting cards.
  • Corner shelving systems - Make the most of the floor space you have by placing corner shelving units in those overlooked corners of your store.
  • Wall shelving bays - If you are limited on space using wall shelving bays ensure you can use your floor space to create aisles and allow shoppers to easily navigate through your store.
