Using Gondola Shelving in Your Retail Store

Gondola shelving is an integral part of most retail stores, providing adaptable shelving options for many different products. Gondola shelving units are double sided and can be connected together to form a freestanding 'run', creating aisles in your store and offering easy browsing for customers.

Gondola shelving is an exceptionally cost-effective and durable type of shop shelving comprising a deep base shelf and at least three additional adjustable shelves. Additional shelves can be added, or existing shelves can be tilted to a variety of angles, and the shelf backing can be swapped for pegboard if necessary, making these shelving units extremely versatile.

Gondola shelving comes in a choice of heights and depths, with base shelf depths ranging from 300mm to 570mm and heights ranging from 1.4m to 2.1m. Individual shelves are available with depths of 250mm to 470mm to suit a huge variety of products. Because gondola shelves are accessible from both sides, they are easy to stock and maintain, either by hand or machine and work well in stores and warehouses.

To finish off your gondola shelving, you'll need end bays which attach to the end of a run for a neat look and offer high-impact displays for stocking promotional items. Shelf risers and dividers and Epos ticket strips can also be added to your gondola shelving for easy organisation and to provide clear signage for customers.

The way you position your gondola shelving is important as it will dictate how your customers move around your store. By creating aisles, you can draw customers back and forth through your store, exposing them to a greater number of different products and increasing the likelihood of impulse buys. If you need help planning your store or would like advice on which type of gondola shelving is right for your shop, please get in touch with us at Shelving4Shops and one of our retail experts will be glad to help!

Shop Counters and Countertop Displays

Shop owners spend a lot of time organising the main retail shelving units in their store, such as wall shelving, gondola shelving and magazine shelving, but there's one more area that can provide a beneficial space for additional displays - your shop counter.

Shop counter displays are great because they offer maximum exposure, being seen by the majority of customers - even those just popping in for a bottle of milk. There are many different ways to utilise your counter space with additional shelving and displays, for example:

  • Line up dump bins and wire stacking baskets to form a queuing area - these storage baskets can be stocked with promotional items, end-of-line stock, awkwardly shaped products or whatever you'd like to encourage your customers to grab as they line up to pay;
  • Arrange riser sets, literature holders and spinners on your shop countertop to display small items that are perfect for suitable for impulse buys;
  • Promo items and discounted products will sell like hot cakes when placed on your counter - perhaps in a display basket with bright signage?
  • Remind customers of special offers verbally and with signs at the counter so they may decide to take another trip around the store before checking out;
  • Consider setting up a loyalty card scheme for regular customers and popular items using a stamp and special discounts for repeat buys.

Visit our website to find out more about any of the items above and to browse our huge range of new shop shelving and accessories, including:
  • ·     Gondola shelving - A popular choice in many stores due to its versatility and functionality, gondola shelving is a staple shelving option for stores of any size. You can use this shelving to create aisles within your store and the range of heights and widths we stock mean that we have the shelving size for you.
    ·     Wall shelving - Use wall shelving around the edge of your store to provide plenty of shelving space while optimising the floor space you have available.
    ·     Shopping baskets - By having stacks of baskets at the front of the store and dotted around the aisles you will encourage customers to purchase more items as it is easier to carry them in a basket than with their hands.
    ·     Wire stacking baskets - These are an excellent way to display sale and impulse purchase items in your store. As these are freestanding they can be used to fill empty spaces and can be easily moved to create new interesting displays.
    ·     Corner shelving - Utilise every inch of floor space you have in your store by using specialist corner shelving to bring life back into an overlooked corner.
    ·     Peg board shelving and pegs - Not all products sit well on classic flat shelving, our range of pegboard shelving allows you to hang products to ensure they are displayed in the best way possible. All of our bays can be slotted together to ensure a seamless shelving display.
There are endless ways to set up your shop counter to maximise sales - visit our retail shelving showroom in Leicestershire or get in touch with us at Shelving4Shops and let us help you design your perfect store with every type of retail racking and shelving you could possibly need!

The Different Types of Shop Racking

When fitting out a store it's likely you'll need several different types of shop racking to provide a range of shelving options for the products you stock. If you're new to the retail industry or are unsure about which kind of shop shelving you need, here's a handy guide to the main components you'll find at Shelving4Shops:

  • Wall shelving: a durable type of shelving that is fitted along a wall to provide standard display space for the majority of products. Available in a choice of heights, widths and depths, wall shelving can be customised with pegboard, magazine racking or extra shelves;
  • Gondola shelving: this type of shelving is double-sided and free-standing. By joining units together in a run you can create aisles in your store for easy browsing and extra display space. Available in a range of sizes, gondola shelving can be finished with end bays for a neat appearance;
  • Pegboard shelving: pegboard includes backing with numerous holes for hanging pegs or different types of shelving and accessories to display a diverse range of products. Pegboard backing can usually be fitted to wall shelving or gondola shelving;
  • Magazine racking: perfect for paper goods of all kinds, including magazines, newspapers, cards, stationery and wrapping paper;
  • Corner units and end bays: these units can be used to finish runs of wall shelving and gondola shelving to ensure that there is no wasted space in your store;
  • Wire shelving and dump bins: there are many types of wire shelving available, including wire stacking baskets and tall wire shelving units for use in window displays or warehouse storage. Dump bins are collapsible storage units to provide additional display space in your store, filling awkward corners or creating queuing areas by the tills. Idea for unusually-shaped products or end-of line items;
  • Shelving accessories: there are several accessories that can help to finish your store and make shelving more efficient, such as shelf risers and dividers, shopping baskets, extra shelves and epos ticket strips.

If you need help planning your store, or would like to find out more about our range of shop racking and shelving, get in touch with us at Shelving4Shops by calling 01455 221512 or emailing sales@shelving4shops.co.uk. You can also visit our Leicestershire shelving showroom to browse our full selection of retail shelving and get advice from our shelving experts in store.

Convenience Store Shelving

For convenience store owners, space is always at a premium, and the type of shop racking you choose can make a huge difference to the efficiency of your store. It's important to plan your store layout carefully, including shop shelving and racking, shelving accessories and shop counters. Every little detail matters when you're working with a smaller space, and, since convenience stores generally stock a wider range of goods than other shops, you'll need shelving that can easily accommodate a variety of products.

Your first stop is wall shelving - the backbone of any convenience store, and the shelving that will be displaying the majority of your products. Wall shelving - as the name suggests - is assembled along a wall, with a number of units joined together to make a 'run'. Wall shelving backing can be adapted to suit the type of products you stock, for example: pegboard shelving for hanging items off hooks, magazine racking for paper goods, or adjustable standard shelving for packets, bottles and tins. Wall shelving also has a sturdy base shelf for stocking heavier, larger items, or stacking newspapers.
Next on the list is gondola shelving - double-sided free-standing shelving units that can be joined together to form aisles either side. These units are perfect for shaping your store and creating a 'flow' for your shop traffic. The obvious benefit of gondola shelving is that you can stock twice as many products because you have shelving on both sides of the unit. Gondola shelving can also be adjusted to different heights and interchanged with different backing according to your stock.

And finally, shelving accessories like risers, epos strips and dividers can help to organise your shelves and keep your shop looking neat and tidy. Temporary and free-standing shelving such as dump bins and wire stacking baskets are ideal for filling awkward spaces and corners or for creating a queuing space near the counter, and can stock promotional items, end-of-line stock or products that are difficult to stack on a shelf.

At Shelving4Shops we hold large quantities of used and new shop shelving and accessories, including:

· Gondola shelving - This is one of the most popular shelving choices we offer, it is a highly versatile option that can be used to create aisles throughout your store or can be used in conjunction with other shelving units we offer to create one seamless shelving unit throughout your store.

· Wall shelving - This shelving can be used around the perimeter of your shop floor to maximise your floor space and provide ample room for displaying items.

· Shopping baskets - Using baskets throughout your store encourages customers to pick up more items throughout their visit as they are not having to balance items in their arms.

· Wire stacking baskets and dump bins - These are an excellent way to display impulse purchase items and sale items throughout the store. As these are freestanding they can be used to fill empty space in your store and can be easily moved to create new interesting displays.

· Corner shelving - Utilise every inch of floor space you have by using specialist corner shelving to bring life back into an overlooked corner of your store. These units can be used in conjunction with our other bay units to create a seamless display.

· Peg board shelving and pegs -Not all products sit well on classic flat shelving, our range of pegboard shelving allows you to hang products to ensure they are displayed in the best way possible. All of our bays can be slotted together to ensure a seamless shelving display.
At Shelving4Shops we can help you create your convenience store from start to finish, from planning your store layout all the way to delivering and assembling your shelving units! Visit our website at www.shelving4shops.co.uk or visit our Leicestershire showroom to see the massive variety of shelving available.

Retailers Need to Maximise Customer Experience to Survive

According to retail director at Google UK Peter Fitzgerald, retailers need to put customers first and make sure products and services are available whenever they need them. Going the extra mile for your consumers helps to improve customer experience and encourages sales, allowing your business to stay afloat in this challenging financial climate.

retail shelving

Does your business have a website? Are there products in your stock that you could make available to buy online? Perhaps you could offer a 'click and collect' service for local customers so they can make purchases online and collect from your store at a time that's convenient? 72% of UK customers own a smartphone and 50% use a mobile device to make purchases, so it's useful - if not essential - for at least your business details to be online.

Following the recession, the retail industry has made slow and difficult progress and anyway that improves your business should be grabbed with both hands - in this case, making your customer experience as good as it can be. This doesn't just mean being online for web customers, it means providing excellent customer service in store, a well-presented shop with neat and tidy retail shelving, an easy layout to your store for convenient browsing, and staff who go above and beyond to make customers happy.

There are several ways of using your shop layout and shelving to maximise sales, too, such as:
We have our full range of new shop shelving and accessories available online at Shelving4Shops including:

·     Gondola shelving - Many stores choose to use gondola shelving due to its versatility and the range of widths and heights that we stock mean that it is perfect for every store. This shelving can be used to create aisles throughout your store and provide ample display room.
·     Wall shelving - If you have a lot of wall space then wall shelving is an excellent way to maximise the floor space you have available. We have a range of heights and widths available to ensure you can find the perfect fit for your store.
·     Shopping baskets - Placing stacks of baskets at the front of your store makes it easier for customers to carry more items. It can also help to have stacks of baskets around the store to encourage customers to pick up more items than they originally intended.
·     Wire stacking baskets - Using wire stacking baskets can be a great way to fill that empty space in the corner or that open floor space you have that is too small for a full bay of shelving. The versatility of these baskets make them a great addition to any store and can be moved regularly to draw customers eyes to new displays.
·     Corner shelving - The design of classic straight shelving means that often a corner is left empty or block off. The simple addition of a corner shelving unit can open up that corner and provide extra display space for products.

·     Peg board shelving and pegs - Not all products that are stocked will sit well on traditional flat shelving, pegboard shelving is an excellent alternative that can, with the simple addition of hooks, easily display hanging items.

Maximising your customer satisfaction is the main factor in keeping your sales healthy and ensuring that your store stays in business! For help planning your store layout or for assistance in choosing the right shop shelving for your needs, please call us on 01455 221512 for expert advice, visit us online at www.shelving4shops.co.uk or come and see our range of retail shelving at our Midlands showroom.

Boost Sales with Fill-in Products

A little extra shop shelving can allow you to offer existing customers extra products to encourage repeat business and acquire new customers. Have you thought about adding fill-in products to your stock to help boost sales? Many convenience stores and local retail shops are taking advantage of this simple method to maximise purchases by providing customers with a wider range of products so that they don't need to travel all the way to the supermarket.

Feature displays and extra products for commonly purchased fill-in items bring new consumers into your store and encourage regular customers to buy additional products when they visit. The type of fill-ins you stock will depend on your area, your other products and your customers, and might include:

  • Pet food and supplies
  • Health and beauty products
  • Home and garden products
  • Seasonal goods
  • Clothing, accessories and shoes
  • Car supplies and accessories
  • Paper goods

Local shoppers often don't want to drive all the way to a department store or supermarket to buy just a few items, so stocking popular products in a convenience store means that you can capture an extra sector of business.

If you have enough existing shelving for extra products, great! But if not, you might want to consider upgrading or adapting your shelving layout to allow for a new range of items. Gondola shelving is ideal for this as it provides double-sided shelving for maximum display space. Wire stacking baskets and dump bins also offer extra shelving at very little cost, enabling you to create displays in any spare area of your store, for example, a line of bins by the counter where customers are queuing. End caps or end bays neaten up gondola and wall shelving runs and provide a whole extra unit of shelving to display seasonal and promotional items - perfect for fill-in products.

Fill-in products are the ideal "grab and go" sales, generating extra impulse buys and making your convenience store live up to its name as a convenient local shop!

Shelving4Shops holds large quantities of used and new shop shelving and accessories, available in black, grey and cream, including:

·     Gondola shelving - This is a popular shelving choice in many stores, use gondola units to create aisles throughout your store or use them in conjunction with other units we offer to create seamless shelving throughout your store
·     Wall shelving - This shelving can be used around the perimeter of your shop floor to maximise your floor space and provide ample room for displaying items.
·     Shopping baskets - Placing baskets at the front and around your store is a great way to encourage customers to purchase more items as baskets make it easier for them to hold items.
·     Wire stacking baskets - These are an excellent way, like dump bins, to display impulse purchase items and sale items throughout the store. As these are freestanding they can be used to fill empty space in your store and can be easily moved to create new interesting displays.
·     Corner shelving - Utilise every inch of floor space you have by using specialist corner shelving to bring life back into an overlooked corner of your store.

Corner Shelving for Shops and Stores

Corner shelving is a great way of maximising your retail space. Corner bays can stand alone but are usually attached to your wall shelving and are a great way to use every amount of space available. You can also match corner shelving to the depth of your wall mounted shelves for a seamless look to your store.

Utilising your corners in this way can add a professional finish to your shop shelving and can make a real impact on your customers’ ability to browse around your store. If there are breaks or an untidy finish in your shop shelving arrangement, customers are far more likely to cut their visit short or just pick up what they need.

In addition to corner shelving units and wall bays, you'll need other types of shelving to make your retail space as efficient and cost-effective as possible. Shelving4shops can offer a great solution for every store - come and visit our showroom to see what our great team has to offer.

Creating a Fresh Looking Store on a Budget

How important is the appearance of your shop shelving? Well, have you ever walked into a store just to turn around and walk straight back out again? If a store looks tired and shabby, people are far less likely to buy, or even stick around to see what's on offer. After all, if you don’t pay attention to your shelving, it makes customers wonder if you pay attention to your stock, too.

In the current financial climate, it can be hard to find the funds for a full store refit, but many store owners are saving some cash by buying component parts to replace those that have worn out or broken, updating their store without breaking their budget.

Epos strips, for example, are a cheap and effective way to put the life back into your store. At around £1.20 per metre, this is an easy way to create a newer looking store for very little money. It’s also a great way to show customers where your seasonal or special offers are by using a contrasting Epos and drawing attention a particular shelving unit or end bay.

Shelving can also get damaged over time but you don’t necessarily need to replace the whole gondola or wall bay, simply buy one of our shelf packs from £12.00 per meter and get all of the Epos and brackets included.

If you have started stocking new lines such as batteries, hair accessories or even ice scrapers that you need to display on a peg board unit, you can save money on a while new unit by simply replacing the back panel of an existing shelving unit. This cheap and temporary method allows you to replace your shelves when you are not using the peg board display.

There are many ways to update your store without spending a fortune, such as new shopping baskets or investing in some dump bins for special offers. There are all sorts of shelving accessories you can add to your store to give it a fresh feel and keep your stock looking neat and tidy.

·     Wall shelving - This shelving can be used around the perimeter of your shop floor to maximise your floor space and provide ample room for displaying items.
·     Wire shopping trolleys - Placing trolleys at the front of the store where customers first walk in can be a great way to encourage customers to purchase more items and larger items. However, make sure your store is large enough for trolleys and that you have enough space in your aisles to comfortably fit a trolley and still allow someone to walk past them.
·     Wire stacking baskets - These are an excellent way, like dump bins, to display impulse purchase items and sale items throughout the store. As these are freestanding they can be used to fill empty space in your store and can be easily moved to create new interesting displays.

Retail tills and cash registers

What aspect of your shop equipment gets the most use each day? Certainly your shelving and your counter, but your cash register gets the most action (or at least we hope it does if you're doing regular business!) - so when did you last update your till?

Having top quality shop shelving is something that every retail store should make a priority, and keeping your store neat and tidy gives a great impression, but even more important than that is a fast-functioning, reliable, long-lasting cash register. If your till breaks down, can't cope with credit and debit cards, or takes an age to function, your staff and customers will get irritated and you may lose custom. At Shelving4Shops we offer a range of high quality electronic cash registers by Sharp to make sure your store runs smoothly at all times.

Sharp XE-A107

The XE-A107WH Sharp cash register is a compact machine that fits well in most retail situations. It includes hard-wearing, colour-coded soft-touch keys and a clear and bright LED display. A lockable cash drawer ensures your shop is safe if you have to step away from the counter for a moment, and VAT/TAX rate and currency exchange facilities help to make business easy. This model comes in black or white to suit the rest of your store interior.

Sharp XE-A137WH Cash Register

We also stock the Sharp XE-A137WH electronic till in white or black with silent printing and a 9 digit, 7 segment LED operator display. This model is perfect for keeping your accounts in order as it offers a 3,000 line electronic journal to provide you with a full audit trail, and is compatible with SD card storage so that you can view your data on your PC.

Shape EX- A207W

And for growing businesses, the XE-A207 Sharp electronic cash register is a great professional machine with a multi-line operator display and full-sized lockable cash drawer. Choose from light grey or black to match your shop style and get set up easily and quickly to use your machine straight away. Make use of the PC Link software programme to keep on top of product maintenance as well as the data export function which allows you to save sales data to a spreadsheet on your computer.

A New Showroom for Shelving4Shops!

The new Shelving4Shops showroom is now open for business and we have much more to offer you in terms of retail shelving and shop racking. It’s one thing looking on a website or out of a catalogue, but it’s another thing seeing our range of shelving first hand, enabling you to visualise your products and give you confidence in what you're buying. It's much easier to make sure you’re getting exactly what you need when shopping at our showroom, and with our large stock of new and used shop fittings available to take away on the same day, you're sure to find the right retail shelving for your requirements.

When you visit our showroom you can also get a free demonstration on how to assemble and fit your shelving correctly, so even if you don’t fancy yourself DIY guru, you should be happy to tackle your new shop shelving by the time you leave! And if not, let us know and we can deliver and assemble it for you.

We're happy to sit down with you at the showroom to discuss your shop shelving and planning needs, and with our range of peg board, gondola and wall shelving all displayed in various sizes, it's easy to see how your shelving layout can work for you.

Of course, it did take a little time for us to get up and running in our new offices and showroom as we had a lot of work to do! First, there was the office move, then we had to remove a wall…

The wall removed

The full extent of the showroom was revealed for the first time
With that done and the shelving from the old showroom dismantled we could really appreciate how big the new showroom would be...

Work begins to build the showroom

Wall bays and stacking baskets are placed
Once the dust settled and the floor was cleaned, work began on installing the new shop shelving display. While this was completed the old showroom was kept semi-functional so our customers at least had something to look at (even if it was a little dusty). A new corner display unit was installed and stacking baskets placed so that our customers could get a sense of scale and versatility of the products.

And after a lot of work and a solid effort from the team, we now have a smooth sleek U shaped showroom for all of the visitors to enjoy, demonstrating our range of quality new and used shop shelving and accessories:

We also have a few new lines on display, such as our mirrored vegetable shelving and wooden bay ends:

Now we're up and running, we are fully equipped to help our customers choose the right shop shelving. Sometimes it can be very difficult to visualise the different sizes of shelving in your store space and we are often asked to recommend an average sized shelf. We always suggest for customers to come into the showroom to see the products for themselves, and we even provide cans and bottles to give you a real sense of scale.

Our showroom is now fully open to visitors and with a new counter installed and the cleaning complete we are happy to invite all our customers new or old to come and take a look at our new shop shelving and accessory product ranges. We're based in the Midlands between Leicester and Coventry with great motorway access from the M1, M6 and M69, so there is absolutely no excuse not to come down for a coffee!

We also have our full range of new shop shelving and accessories available online at Shelving4Shops including:
