Using Gondola Shelving in Your Retail Store

Gondola shelving is an integral part of most retail stores, providing adaptable shelving options for many different products. Gondola shelving units are double sided and can be connected together to form a freestanding 'run', creating aisles in your store and offering easy browsing for customers.

Gondola shelving is an exceptionally cost-effective and durable type of shop shelving comprising a deep base shelf and at least three additional adjustable shelves. Additional shelves can be added, or existing shelves can be tilted to a variety of angles, and the shelf backing can be swapped for pegboard if necessary, making these shelving units extremely versatile.

Gondola shelving comes in a choice of heights and depths, with base shelf depths ranging from 300mm to 570mm and heights ranging from 1.4m to 2.1m. Individual shelves are available with depths of 250mm to 470mm to suit a huge variety of products. Because gondola shelves are accessible from both sides, they are easy to stock and maintain, either by hand or machine and work well in stores and warehouses.

To finish off your gondola shelving, you'll need end bays which attach to the end of a run for a neat look and offer high-impact displays for stocking promotional items. Shelf risers and dividers and Epos ticket strips can also be added to your gondola shelving for easy organisation and to provide clear signage for customers.

The way you position your gondola shelving is important as it will dictate how your customers move around your store. By creating aisles, you can draw customers back and forth through your store, exposing them to a greater number of different products and increasing the likelihood of impulse buys. If you need help planning your store or would like advice on which type of gondola shelving is right for your shop, please get in touch with us at Shelving4Shops and one of our retail experts will be glad to help!

Organise Your Shop Shelving for Maximum Sales

Retail shelving is the building blocks of any store - a neat, tidy, well-organised shop with high quality shelving can create success from simply being designed in the right way to maximise the shopper experience and encourage more sales.

  • Pegboard shelving works well for smaller items that need to be hung from pegs, or for when you have a wide variety of different shaped and sized products, for example in a pet shop;
  • Gondola units are a double-sided freestanding form of shelving that provides a space-saving way to create aisles in your store;

  • Shopping baskets - By having stacks of baskets at the front of the store and dotted around the aisles you will encourage customers to purchase more items as it is easier to carry them in a basket than with their hands.
  • Peg board shelving and pegs - Not all products sit well on classic flat shelving, our range of pegboard shelving allows you to hang products to ensure they are displayed in the best way possible. All of our bays can be slotted together to ensure a seamless shelving display.
  • Corner shelving - Utilise every inch of floor space you have in your store by using specialist corner shelving to bring life back into an overlooked corner.
  • Wire stacking baskets - These are an excellent way to display sale and impulse purchase items in your store. As these are freestanding they can be used to fill empty spaces and can be easily moved to create new interesting displays.

When planning your store you'll need to take into account the size of your shopping area, the position of your shop counter and whether you will be using gondola shelving to turn floor space into aisles. The type of retail shelving you choose will depend on the products you'll be stocking:

There are other ways to organise and arrange your store to help make it as inviting and enticing as possible. Using different materials gives different effects according to your store's intended atmosphere - glass gives a high quality appeal while wood can appear rustic, clean and crisp plastic looks clean and tidy while metal offers a contemporary look. For a professional appearance, your shelving should stay well stocked and in good condition - not too empty nor overcrowded, and always clean and free from cracks or breakages. By arranging your shelves at equal or similar heights with complementary products kept together, the aesthetic of your display will be attractive and interesting. Signage and displays should be kept up to date and changed regularly to give a sense of novelty for regular shoppers - keeping a particular shelving unit aside for promotional items and special offers allows customers to know exactly where to find a bargain at every visit. And why not be creative with your retail displays? Add in seasonal decorations or create a theme using colour schemes and signage - give your store a personal style and your customers will remember you!

Retail Shelving Tips for Success

The way you arrange your shop shelving and the way you stack your shelves can have a great impact on your retail success. Driving traffic around your store and catching each customer's eye with well-displayed products is half the battle, and there are plenty of ways to boost your sales simply by being mindful of the way you organise your store. Here are our top tips on arranging and maintaining your retail shelving to optimise your shop's success:

  • Choose stock wisely: do your research and keep on top of trends and local preference when stocking your store. Make sure that you are providing two main types of product: items that your customers need and are specifically looking for, and items that they will be prompted to buy on impulse when they see them on your shelves. Both these types of merchandise require a little psychological profiling on your customers and may change over time, or from season to season;
  • Keep your shelves well-stocked: under-stocked stores look run-down and neglected, while over-stocked shelves look messy and are awkward to use. Before opening, ensure that your store looks neat and welcoming and that shelves are adequately stocked. Any end-of-line items that are starting to look thin on the shelves can be placed onto promotional bays, dump bins, or stacking wire baskets;
  • Stock shelves at the right height: The height at which you stock your products can affect how well they sell - popular and premium items should be placed at eye-level, while cheaper or less-popular products generally go on higher or lower shelves. However, you can make the most of this eye-level popularity to get rid of less popular items, too!
  • Co-ordinate your store: Separate your store into different sections according to product type and colour co-ordinate using signage or Epos ticket strips so that customers can easily find what they're looking for. Placing similar items or products that go well together in the same area can double up your sales!
  • Dedicate an area to sale items: If customers know that a particular end bay or wall shelving unit always contains reduced-price items, it will be well-used! Clearly mark where your sale items or promotions are, and position these areas at the back of the store so that customers have to walk past the rest of your stock to get to them, encouraging impulse buys;
  • Be versatile with your shelving: Adapt and adjust your shop shelving according to your needs, and while your core products should stay in the same place, there's no reason why you can't change the configuration of other items occasionally and provide a bit of variety! Use pegboard shelving, extra shelves, risers and dividers to organise your shop shelving and you'll find it easy to accommodate different sized and shaped products;

The Different Types of Shop Racking

When fitting out a store it's likely you'll need several different types of shop racking to provide a range of shelving options for the products you stock. If you're new to the retail industry or are unsure about which kind of shop shelving you need, here's a handy guide to the main components you'll find at Shelving4Shops:

  • Wall shelving: a durable type of shelving that is fitted along a wall to provide standard display space for the majority of products. Available in a choice of heights, widths and depths, wall shelving can be customised with pegboard, magazine racking or extra shelves;
  • Gondola shelving: this type of shelving is double-sided and free-standing. By joining units together in a run you can create aisles in your store for easy browsing and extra display space. Available in a range of sizes, gondola shelving can be finished with end bays for a neat appearance;
  • Pegboard shelving: pegboard includes backing with numerous holes for hanging pegs or different types of shelving and accessories to display a diverse range of products. Pegboard backing can usually be fitted to wall shelving or gondola shelving;
  • Magazine racking: perfect for paper goods of all kinds, including magazines, newspapers, cards, stationery and wrapping paper;
  • Corner units and end bays: these units can be used to finish runs of wall shelving and gondola shelving to ensure that there is no wasted space in your store;
  • Wire shelving and dump bins: there are many types of wire shelving available, including wire stacking baskets and tall wire shelving units for use in window displays or warehouse storage. Dump bins are collapsible storage units to provide additional display space in your store, filling awkward corners or creating queuing areas by the tills. Idea for unusually-shaped products or end-of line items;
  • Shelving accessories: there are several accessories that can help to finish your store and make shelving more efficient, such as shelf risers and dividers, shopping baskets, extra shelves and epos ticket strips.

If you need help planning your store, or would like to find out more about our range of shop racking and shelving, get in touch with us at Shelving4Shops by calling 01455 221512 or emailing sales@shelving4shops.co.uk. Magazine Shelving and Racking

Magazine shelving units are a versatile way to display paper goods, including cards, magazines, newspapers, stationery and even wrapping paper. Whether you're stocking extra cards in the run up to Christmas or expanding your stock to include other paper goods, magazine shelves are adaptable and durable, perfect for many different requirements.
These shelving racks can easily be connected to other shop shelving units like wall shelving to create bespoke runs. As you can see in the picture, the height of each shelf can be adjusted according to the type of products you have on display, and the large base shelf is ideal for stacking newspapers or housing boxed items.
Our magazine shelving units are available with a standard 470mm base shelf but this can be swapped for any size you need. Each unit has eight angled magazine shelf tiers and as with all our shelving units, additional shelves can be purchased and added if needed. Choose from three different heights to match your existing shelving: 1.8m, 2.1m or 2.4m.
If you're not sure how magazine shelving will work with your current shelving configuration, bring along a basic floor plan of your store to our shelving showroom and we'll help you to work out the best arrangement for your requirements! While you're there, browse our huge range of new shop shelving and accessories, including:

Keep Your Retail Shelving Displays Interesting

Keeping your retail shelving displays appealing and interesting can help drive customers into your store and boost sales of popular, promotional and end-of-line products. The arrangement of both your shelving units and your products can have an effect on your overall revenue, especially during holiday season when placement really counts.

There are five main areas of shelving display that you need to be aware of when arranging your store:

1) Window Displays: Your window display is the first thing customers see as they walk past or into your shop. Keep your window shelving updated and intriguing with seasonal goods, bright signage and popular items;

2) Core Stock Display: This is where you display your most popular items - the products that your customers are probably specifically coming in to buy. Keeping these items in the same place helps customers find what they need quickly and easily, and these shelves must always be well-stocked, neat and tidy;

3) Promotional Bays: End bays, corner bays and promotional bays can be used to stock special items, promotional products and end-of-line stock that you want to draw attention to. Use signage and clever arrangements to give these areas impact;

4) Sale Shelving Areas: If you always place sale items in the same shelving units, customers will know where to look when they want a good deal. Mix in other promotional products to encourage extra purchases and customers will automatically assume they're saving money;

5) Counter Displays: Placing certain goods on the counter or in a line of dump bins where your customers' queue can increase impulse buys and boost your sales, especially if you display seasonal products like Christmas chocolates or greetings cards.

Moving your shelving around or changing the configuration of your store by adding pegboard shelving, magazine racking or extra shelves can help to give the appearance of newness in your shop and provide a sense of novelty to customers, encouraging them to see products they might have otherwise walked past.

At Shelving4shops we stock a large range of shelving and accessories to ensure you can find everything you need for your store, just some of the items we stock are:

· Gondola shelving - This popular item is featured in many stores due to its versatility and the different widths and heights that are available. This unit can also be used in conjunction with our other bay units to create a seamless flow of shelving throughout your store.
· Peg board shelving and pegs - Not all products sit well on a flat shelf, for those products pegboard shelving is the perfect solution. This bay can be used for hooks when you have items to hang or can be transformed into a regular shelf when the hooks are not needed.
· Wall shelving - This shelving can be used around the perimeter of your shop floor to maximise your space and provide extra room for displaying items.
· Shopping baskets - A simple trick utilised by many stores is adding baskets throughout the store. This encourages customers to pick up more items throughout their visit as they are not having to balance items in their arms.
· Wire stacking baskets and dump bins - These are an excellent way to display impulse purchase items and sale items throughout the store. As these are freestanding they can be used to fill empty space in your store and can be easily moved to create new interesting displays.
· Corner shelving - Utilise every inch of floor space you have by using specialist corner shelving to bring life back into an overlooked corner of your store. These units can be used in conjunction with our other bay units to create a seamless display.

All in all, your shelving arrangement is dependent on the space you have available and the products you stock - and if you need help deciding on the right kind of shelving for your store, get in touch with us at Shelving4Shops and we'll be happy to advise you.

Convenience Store Shelving

For convenience store owners, space is always at a premium, and the type of shop racking you choose can make a huge difference to the efficiency of your store. It's important to plan your store layout carefully, including shop shelving and racking, shelving accessories and shop counters. Every little detail matters when you're working with a smaller space, and, since convenience stores generally stock a wider range of goods than other shops, you'll need shelving that can easily accommodate a variety of products.

Your first stop is wall shelving - the backbone of any convenience store, and the shelving that will be displaying the majority of your products. Wall shelving - as the name suggests - is assembled along a wall, with a number of units joined together to make a 'run'. Wall shelving backing can be adapted to suit the type of products you stock, for example: pegboard shelving for hanging items off hooks, magazine racking for paper goods, or adjustable standard shelving for packets, bottles and tins. Wall shelving also has a sturdy base shelf for stocking heavier, larger items, or stacking newspapers.
Next on the list is gondola shelving - double-sided free-standing shelving units that can be joined together to form aisles either side. These units are perfect for shaping your store and creating a 'flow' for your shop traffic. The obvious benefit of gondola shelving is that you can stock twice as many products because you have shelving on both sides of the unit. Gondola shelving can also be adjusted to different heights and interchanged with different backing according to your stock.

And finally, shelving accessories like risers, epos strips and dividers can help to organise your shelves and keep your shop looking neat and tidy. Temporary and free-standing shelving such as dump bins and wire stacking baskets are ideal for filling awkward spaces and corners or for creating a queuing space near the counter, and can stock promotional items, end-of-line stock or products that are difficult to stack on a shelf.

At Shelving4Shops we hold large quantities of used and new shop shelving and accessories, including:

· Gondola shelving - This is one of the most popular shelving choices we offer, it is a highly versatile option that can be used to create aisles throughout your store or can be used in conjunction with other shelving units we offer to create one seamless shelving unit throughout your store.

· Wall shelving - This shelving can be used around the perimeter of your shop floor to maximise your floor space and provide ample room for displaying items.

· Shopping baskets - Using baskets throughout your store encourages customers to pick up more items throughout their visit as they are not having to balance items in their arms.

· Peg board shelving and pegs -Not all products sit well on classic flat shelving, our range of pegboard shelving allows you to hang products to ensure they are displayed in the best way possible. All of our bays can be slotted together to ensure a seamless shelving display.
At Shelving4Shops we can help you create your convenience store from start to finish, from planning your store layout all the way to delivering and assembling your shelving units! Maintaining Your Shop Shelving

The maintenance of your store is just as important as the original fit out. Keeping your shelving neat and tidy and clean is an essential part of running your retail operation and ensures that your customers have a great first impression of your shop. Once you've chosen and fitted your shop shelving - from gondola shelving to wall shelving, dump bins to magazine racking - your next port of call is to purchase a range of shop shelving accessories that will keep your store looking great.

Shelving accessories include shelf risers and dividers, Epos ticket strips, spare shelves, end finisher legs, dump bins, wire stacking baskets, shopping baskets and any other product that helps your daily operations go smoothly. All these items offer a cost-effective way of maintaining your shop and organise your products for easy browsing. Sometimes time is limited when you're trying to run a busy shop, and maintenance might be low on your to-do list but it's important to make regular cleaning and tidying a part of your daily and weekly routine.

Here are a few things you should have on your maintenance checklist for your store:

  • Neatening products in individual shelves
  • Sweeping under and around shelving
  • Dusting and wiping down shelves
  • Checking lighting and electrical goods
  • Cleaning and checking refrigerated units
  • Stacking shelves and organising products
  • Changing window displays and end bays
  • Restocking dump bins with promotional or end-of-line products
  • Posting up special offer signs and posters
  • Neatening and cleaning your shop counter
  • Ensuring aisles are clear and easy to move around (especially for wheelchairs and pushchairs)
  • Checking the condition (and smell!) of fresh products

Keeping a tidy and fresh store makes a great impression on customers and is an important part of running a store. If you find it hard to maintain your store, you might need to think about reorganising your shelving configuration.

·     Shopping baskets - Placing stacks of baskets at the front of your store makes it easier for customers to carry more items. It can also help to have stacks of baskets around the store to encourage customers to pick up more items than they originally intended.
·     Wire stacking baskets - Using wire stacking baskets can be a great way to fill that empty space in the corner or that open floor space you have that is too small for a full bay of shelving. Shop Shelving Showcase Displays

Create a little variety in your shop shelving by switching up your showcase displays regularly to highlight promotions, popular products and end-of-line items. By stacking and organising your products in an attractive way on your shop shelving, customers will be drawn into your store and encouraged to browse through each aisle and shelf. Gondola shelving is ideal for this, as it creates aisles within your store space and provides double-sided shelving to promote a wide range of items. Wall mounted shelving is easily accessible, while pegboard shelving allows you to stock many different sized products, and hang items that are difficult to stack on a shelf.

Sometimes the right kind of shelving can boost an average product to a desirable one - it's all about positioning, arrangement, signage and promotion. Think about the overall aesthetic of your store:

  • Is your store clean and tidy?
  • Is your store bright and well-maintained?
  • Is your store colourful or coordinated?
  • Do products and promotions have clear signage?
  • Is it easy for customers to browse your shelving?
  • Are similar items grouped together?
  • Does your store smell fresh, clean and inviting? (Fresh produce like baked goods, coffee and tea, fruit and vegetables can all bring a tasty element to the scent of your store.)

Brighten up your shop shelving with clear signs, Epos ticket strips and promotional material to entice customers around the store. When you have a promotional product in stock, place it in clear view on an end bay or in a prominent position and draw attention to it!

shop shelving accessories

Boost Sales with Fill-in Products

A little extra shop shelving can allow you to offer existing customers extra products to encourage repeat business and acquire new customers. Have you thought about adding fill-in products to your stock to help boost sales? Many convenience stores and local retail shops are taking advantage of this simple method to maximise purchases by providing customers with a wider range of products so that they don't need to travel all the way to the supermarket.

Feature displays and extra products for commonly purchased fill-in items bring new consumers into your store and encourage regular customers to buy additional products when they visit. The type of fill-ins you stock will depend on your area, your other products and your customers, and might include:

  • Pet food and supplies
  • Health and beauty products
  • Home and garden products
  • Seasonal goods
  • Clothing, accessories and shoes

Local shoppers often don't want to drive all the way to a department store or supermarket to buy just a few items, so stocking popular products in a convenience store means that you can capture an extra sector of business.

If you have enough existing shelving for extra products, great! But if not, you might want to consider upgrading or adapting your shelving layout to allow for a new range of items. Gondola shelving is ideal for this as it provides double-sided shelving for maximum display space. Wire stacking baskets and dump bins also offer extra shelving at very little cost, enabling you to create displays in any spare area of your store, for example, a line of bins by the counter where customers are queuing. End caps or end bays neaten up gondola and wall shelving runs and provide a whole extra unit of shelving to display seasonal and promotional items - perfect for fill-in products.

Fill-in products are the ideal "grab and go" sales, generating extra impulse buys and making your convenience store live up to its name as a convenient local shop!

Shelving4Shops holds large quantities of used and new shop shelving and accessories, available in black, grey and cream, including:

·     Gondola shelving - This is a popular shelving choice in many stores, use gondola units to create aisles throughout your store or use them in conjunction with other units we offer to create seamless shelving throughout your store
·     Wall shelving - This shelving can be used around the perimeter of your shop floor to maximise your floor space and provide ample room for displaying items.
·     Shopping baskets - Placing baskets at the front and around your store is a great way to encourage customers to purchase more items as baskets make it easier for them to hold items.
·     Wire stacking baskets - These are an excellent way, like dump bins, to display impulse purchase items and sale items throughout the store. As these are freestanding they can be used to fill empty space in your store and can be easily moved to create new interesting displays.
·     Corner shelving - Utilise every inch of floor space you have by using specialist corner shelving to bring life back into an overlooked corner of your store.
·     Peg board shelving and pegs - Not all products sit well on classic flat shelving, our range of pegboard shelving allows you to hang products to ensure they are displayed in the best way possible. All of our bays can be slotted together to ensure a seamless shelving display.
